Who We Are

First Community Church is an 'Open and Affirming' and 'Just Peace' church within the United Church of Christ.  We are also participants in the UCC's Still Speaking Campaign. In January 2002, the congregation adopted a new mission statement, reflecting our beliefs:

Our misson, through the grace of God, is to
open whatever is closed -
the church to all people,
hearts to God's love,
minds to God's story, and
lives to be instruments of change.

We invite you to explore this website and join us in worship, to learn more about the people, activities and programs of First Community Church.

Our Journey

In 1949 a group of persons from 14 denominational backgrounds banded together to form a new nondemoninational church.  First Community Church (FCC) soon became known for its freedom in Christian thought and its innovative programming.

FCC affiliated with the Congregational Christian Churches in 1955.  This group merged with the Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1957, forming the United Church of Christ (UCC).

The congregation undertook an extensive visioning process during 1998, and adopted a new set of Goals and Affirmations on April 30, 2000.  During this process, the members overwhelmingly accepted that, true to the Biblical mandate of hospitality to all God's people, we are an 'Open and Affirming' congregation - meaning that we express our openness to all people, regardless of race, religious background, sexual orientation or economic status.

In these early years of the 21st century, the congregation continues to experience changes, both in worship and in doing Christ's work.  We come from many faith backgrounds in the belief that we can worship and serve as one.  We invite anyone seeking a progressive Christian congregation to come and journey with us.
